Air Cleaner:
Air cleaners or filters are installed to clean the air. They prevent abrasive particulate matter from entering the engine cylinders. There are two types of air cleaners:
• Dry Type: Air is cleaned by passing through a filter element like screen mesh, crimped paper, metal, spun glass or cloth.
• Oil type: The cleaning of air is accomplished by passing it through oil. In the image shows an oil bath type air cleaner. The air enters the filter near its top and is directed towards the oil bath surface. Its direction is thus reversed and it passes. This type of air filter has the advantage that it offers low resistance to the flow of air.
As an air filter becomes dirty, the capacity for it to filter the air going into the engine is reduced. Because of this the engine is not able to function properly the symptoms of dirty air filter are:
• Increase in fuel consumption
• Problem of Ignition
•Problem of starting the engine
•Rough idling
It is, therefore, important to examine the filter and replace it as per manufacturer's recommendations.
