Why use Engine Muffler ?

MUFFLER:

The function of muffler is to reduce the noise that would be produced if the exhaust gases were allowed to pass directly through the pipes to the rear of the vehicle. It is thus a device for reducing the noise emitted by the exhaust of the engine. In order to be efficient, a muffler must decrease the velocity of exhaust gases and either absorb sound waves or cancel them. It contains a series of holes, passages and resonance chambers to absorb high-pressure surges.

Mufflers are installed within the exhaust system, although they are not designed to do any primary exhaust function. An unavoidable side effect of muffler is that it increases back pressure, which reduces engine efficiency. Therefore, many different methods are adopted to reduce the back pressure. Some of the modern types of mufflers used are:

• Vector muffler ― For large diesel trucks. It uses concentric cones.
• Spiral baffle muffler ― For regular cars. It uses a spiral -shaped baffle system.
• Aero turbine muffler ㅡ It creates partial vacuum at intervals.
• Split, delay, merge muffler ㅡ It utilizes detouring pipes for virtually zero back pressure.
• Flow-master muffler ― It use less less restrictive construction.
